I find volunteering with AC fulfilling because I know that no matter the outcome my contribution makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives and there is only a small segment of the population that has the skills to assist SRL’s with their legal forms and my services are needed here. Liann Kucera paralegal Kaplan Waddell
Thank you for your interest in Amici Curiae (Friends of Court) Legal Forms Workshop. Our pro bono service is powered by legal professionals: paralegals, lawyers, law students, administrative assistants, accountants and librarians. We assist the public in completing legal forms, and preparing for their virtual appearance before the courts and tribunals. We do not provide summary legal advice nor take conduct of the client's files. (updated: September 29, 2021)
Here is our CV for your reference.
Chair 1 Role
Chair 1s are responsible for caring for the client during the meetings. The majority of our Chair 1s are paralegals and lawyers. They are responsible for drafting the correct form.
They do not provide legal advice and rely on duty counsel to provide the necessary advice to complete a form.
To assist clients as Chair 1s, volunteers need to: be practicing law, have a minimum of 2 years working in a British Columbia law firm setting, attending law school in your second year, or have received an invitation from the executive director.
If volunteering during our evening workshops does not work for you, there are other volunteer opportunities, just contact our volunteer coordinator.
As the scope of practice areas is quite broad, volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend free continuing professional development (CPD).
Chair 2 Role
Chair 2s perform administrative tasks to support the Chair 1 during client sessions. These may include completing AC's Client Session Records, looking up the correct form, researching authorities, calling duty counsel to attend, and in many cases listening to clients while the Chair 1 is drafting a form.
Other roles
As a volunteer firm accountant, you help draft F4 and F8 Financial Statement affidavits for clients.
As a volunteer law librarian, you help in legal research.
As a volunteer pet (pro-bone-o), you help support our volunteers and clients.
Scheduling and Cancellation
Periodically, we provide you a schedule of workshops using Survey Monkey. You select dates that work for you. Book as much or as little as you are comfortable with. We will inform you of your assignment.
Approximately 6 days prior to the assigned date, we will provide you with a client roster, for you to do a conflicts check.
Volunteers, to be assigned, they are expected to respond within 1 business day if they have any conflicts.
Getting started
To get started, let us arrange for you to observe a workshop. See if you like it. Download a Volunteer Information Package (click here). Email it to our volunteer coordinator.
Our volunteer coordinator will arrange for you to observe workshops that interest you. Once done we can connect again.
